Calculator Policy
Dear Parents,
The National and State standards for teaching mathematics include a provision that calculators and
other modern technology must be used in the classroom. We at Orange High School are continually
working on meeting this goal. The AP Calculus exam, as well as ACT, SAT, PSAT and achievement
tests, all require or allow the use of a calculator. The use of the graphing calculator has become an
integral part of our math curriculum. As found in the Orange High School curriculum guide, students
are required to have access to the specified calculator for the following courses:
Course Type of Calculator Needed
- Algebra I or Geometry.....................................scientific calculator (TI-30X IIS)
- Algebra II or Honors Algebra II, Precalculus or Honors Precalculus, AP Calculus,
Stat/Discrete Math or AP Statistics..........................graphing calculator (TI-nspire nonCAS)
Once students begin taking Algebra II they will be introduced the the graphing calculator. The
students can expect extensive use of graphing calculators and instruction of their use in all courses
at and above the Algebra II level. We are recommending purchasing the TI-nspire nonCAS graphing calculator if you need to purchase a newgraphing calculator. Other graphing calculators will not be compatible with the Calculator Based Labs, CBLs, that we will be using in the classroom. The TI-84 is not an advisable purchase. We also prefer that the student not use the TI-86 or TI-89 . These calculators do not contain the software that we need in the math program.
Finally, we are asking that you take a moment to discuss with your child the purpose and significance
of these calculators. They should never be left unattended or in an unlocked locker. They are to be
used as a tool to enhance the mathematics being taught. In accordance with that thought, the math department is discouraging improper use of memory of these graphing calculators, i.e., games and forbidden test information. Please remember that we are not responsible for damaged, lost or stolen calculators.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to phone.
Sincerely,
Eric Oberster
