The long-bodied cellar spider has long legs, a skinny, long body and the color is tan. The spider has eight eyes. They live in basements, attics, barns and sheds. Cellar spiders eat small moths, flies, gnats and mosquitoes. They build long, stringy webs. The males have very large tarsi- the last segment of their palps. The palps are leg-like feelers found near the mouths of spiders. Adults live for 2 years. There are about 20 species in the United States and Canada. The female may produce up to three egg sacks containing up to 13 to 60 eggs. The female typically carries the egg sac between her until they hatch. Enemies of the cellar spiders are birds, people, wasps, snakes, lizards and frogs. Some spiders eat each other. Humans destroy spiders because they do not know how important they are. |
