The furrow spider has a brown to grayish carapace and is bristly. The abdomen is flattened. It has eight eyes. The female is larger than the male. It lives near lakes, grasslands, and on top of buildings. It eats insects such as butterflies, moths, beetles, flies, and cicadas. It spins a web in the evening and builds a papery retreat near its web on reeds and dead plants. It's shaped as a circle. The mother spins and egg sac then dies when it gets cold but the babies survive in their egg sac. The male will mate three or four times. Predators of orb weavers include several bird species and some kinds of wasps. |
