The deer mouse has shiny eyes. It comes in many different colors. It has a white tummy and a long tail. Its a gray to reddish brown color. Most species have life spans of four to five years. In nature, few deer mice survive longer than six months. Its habitat is woodlands, fields, grasslands and prairies. It eats seeds, nuts, fruit, insects and fungi.

Predators of the deer mouse are coyotes, foxes, bobcats, weasels, skunks, badgers, grasshopper mice, snakes, owls, and other birds of prey. Mom feeds them milk for about four weeks. They are nocturnal. The deer mouse does not hibernate and it makes a nest in the winter. The deer mouse is not endangered in Ohio. Its scientific name means "mouse with boots" because of its white feet.
