Pygmy Shrew

Jacob

The pygmy shrew is brown on top, sort of gray below, and the size of a dime. It is smallest mammal in the world! It lives about 15 to 16 months. It lives in forests and water. It likes to eat small beetles and wood lice. Predators of the pygmy shrew are skunks, foxes, snakes, owls, hawks, opossums, and other carnivorous mammals. The babies drink their mothers milk for about 4 weeks when they leave their mom. The pygmy shrew does not hibernate during the winter. The pygmy shrew is partly nocturnal because it has to hunt for food during the night and day. It is not endangered in Ohio. The pygmy shrew is a very interesting mammal: it can float in the water and they are so scared of loud noises that they sometimes die from the sound of thunder!
