Martha Dandridge Custis (1731-1802)
Vice President John Adams (1789-1797)
You may believe me,
my dear Patsy, when I assure you, in the most solemn manner,
that, so far from seeking this appointment, I have used every
endeavor in my power to avoid it, not only from my unwillingness
to part with you and the family, but from a consciousness of
its being a trust too great for my capacity .......
- -- Letter to his wife
upon becoming Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army (June
18, 1775)

He probably chopped down
a Christmas tree on his Mt. Vernon Plantation, but he NEVER chopped
down a cherry tree (thank-you, Mason Weems)! He probably lied
at times and he never stood up in a boat crossing a river (think
about it!). How about that silver dollar story? Noooooooooooooo!
Also, give some credit to John Hanson (do you know who he was?).
However, give George Washington a "big hand" for his
role in launching and creating our new government!
