Background:

I have been a teacher for thirty-three years -- the last thirty at Orange High School in Pepper Pike, Ohio. I have taught Advanced Placement United States History for twenty years. In November of 1996 I began to explore the idea of creating a Web page primarily for my A.P. United States History classes. I felt it was very important to begin the implemention of the resources on the Web into my course because of the vast amount of information "out there". I did not know ANYTHING about a Web Page and found Page Mill 3.0 to be very "user friendly". The whole thing just kind of "took off", and it has become an integral part of how I teach the class. To have access to the various history departments around the country has been an incredible addition to my course of study in that I am able to see "online" the requirements colleges have for the early level courses (assignments, reading material, requirements, etc.). My students are required to be on the Web to access reading assignments, information for student presentations, writing assignments, etc. This entire experience has reinforced the notion that "the more you know, the more you don't know."

Here are just a few observations about the Page:

The Opening Page

1. This page shows the pictures of ten presidents -- nine of whom I respect the most (Richard Nixon is the exception). Access the page and "click" the picture of Nixon to find out why. Nixon and Kennedy are in juxtapostion because they evoke the greatest amount of personal emotion (one good and one bad - just like the "yin-yang"). The other eight presidents shown are my favorite. If you "click" on each picture, you will be taken to a separate page on that particular president. I have included "links" on the Web to find out more about the individual (the Handout will show you some of the "links" for each of these presidents).

2. The picture of the White House will take you to the President's Page. I have links that relate to general information, biographies, First Ladies, documents and election results. I created a page that will take you to the Presidential Libraries of Herbert Hoover through Bill Clinton . Also, check out the link to "Presidential Portraits". I have a lot of work to do on this one.

3. The next area is the Main Menu. It includes the following categories:

A.P. United States History: This will take you to the Orange course of study, a bibliography, the A.P. Syllabus and a history of how my students have performed on the A.P. Examination. The "Syllabus" is one that I enjoy working on very much. "Click" on the Unit number and you will go to the topics of discussion for that particular era in United States history. I am working on a list of "links" for each unit of study. Eventually, I am going to categorize them based upon various subtopics within the unit.

The American Century: I just created this part of my overall page in July of 2001. It is just in the beginning stages and there is much to be done.

United States History "Links": I have included a wealth of links on this page that should be able to direct students or teachers to various areas of interest. The areas included on this page thus far are links for Advanced Placement, Topical History, College Links, General History, Document Collections, Media Sources, and Teacher/School Home Pages.

Education Links: This page displays links to general education topics of interest.

Lesson Plans: There are lesson plan links on this page along with a couple of my own creation. I really want to add more of mine when I get the time to properly format them for the Page.

For What It's Worth: There may some things that are just interesting and do not necessarily relate to United States History. This is where those topics will be "deposited".

Historical Tidbits: The links here could be called "a little bit of this and a little bit of that." The page includes some museum links and miscellaneous historical items. I want to do much more to make this "choice" appealing.

Graduation Speech: I just included this because I am proud of the fact that the Orange Class of 1996 asked me to be the Commencement speaker. Much of who I am is in the speech.

Projects (2002-2003): One of the reasons that I created this Web Page was to use it in conjunction with my three Advanced Placement United States History classes. They have to access my page to get the directions for the various assignments listed in this category.

General History Links: These "links" are useful for general history education topics.

Weekly Reading Assignments: I make it a point to put the reading assignments on this page the Thursday before the week of assignments. This has proved helpful to those students who may be absent for an extended period of time. I may even get to the point where I put the reading assignments on for a two week time period.

Sample Unit Test Questions: This page is intended to give the students a chance to work on practice tests before the examination on that particular unit. Eventually, I plan to have a 25 question objective test (with Key) and 15 sample essay questions per unit.

Home Page Background: This is the page that you are on right now. It is just an explanation of the various parts of the page. The page was put on the internet in March of 1997 -- a year later the page had 3400 "hits". The counter showed 74, 329 "hits" at 7:30 A.M. on February 2, 2003.

You can get "tons" of background textures and icons for your page by just searching ("surfing") the net. The animated "gifs" are fun.
