Essay Rubric

A well-written essay has style and substance. It whould follow a logical, sequential order so a reader has no trouble understanding the author's intent. I expect all your essays to follow the format below:

1. Introductory Paragraph:
   
   • contains a condensation of the major points you will be making
     
   • at least three points
     
   • events placed in historical context
     
   • key terms defined as subsidiary phrases or clauses
     
     
• Support Paragraphs #1:
  
  • develops part of thesis
    
  • contains a generalization supported by facts
    
  • concludes with a transitional sentence
    
    
• Support Paragraphs #2:
  
  • develops part of thesis
    
  • contains a generalization supported by facts
    
  • concludes with a transitional sentence
    
    
• Support Paragraphs #3:
  
  • develops part of thesis
    
  • contains a generalization supported by facts
    
  • concludes with a transitional sentence
    
    
• Support Paragraphs #4 (optional)
  
  • develops part of thesis
    
  • contains a generalization supported by facts
    
  • concludes with a transitional sentence
    
    
• Concluding Paragraph
  
  • restates thesis
    
  • proves thesis substantiation by material presented in body
